With global mobile data traffic expected to grow eight times by the end of 2023, there is a need for more efficient technology, higher data rates and better spectrum utilization. New applications such as 4K/8K video streaming, virtual and augmented reality and emerging industrial use cases will also require higher bandwidth, greater capacity, security, and lower latency. Equipped with these capabilities, 5G infrastructure and devices will bring new opportunities for people, society, and businesses. 5G could account for as many as 1.2 billion connections by 2025. By then, 5G networks are likely to cover one-third of the world’s population. The impact on the mobile industry and its customers will be profound.

5G is more than a new generation of technologies. It denotes a new era in which connectivity will become increasingly fluid and flexible. 5G Networks will adapt to applications and performance will be tailored precisely to the needs of the user. Implementing 5G also has its challenges – it will require exploiting millimeter wave frequency bands, which has been formidable so far. From a technology perspective, 5G is adding significant complexity for operators: more spectrum, more frequency bands and more transmission points, while providing new services and serving new markets. With 5G, the industry is finding new ways for businesses to tap into their potential. 5G breakthroughs will enable network operators, cloud providers, and mobile device manufacturers to push innovation further than ever before with next-generation mobile customer experiences—fueled by super-high-speed, low-latency solutions.

A technology and industry overview will be given by Dr. Byung K. Yi, former CTO at Interdigital and Senior EVP of LG Electronics. The distinguished panel will follow.

  • Gerry Flynn, Director Corporate Technology, Verizon Communications
  • Tom Babineau, Senior. Manager, Sales Engineering T-mobile
  • Renuka Bhalerao, Connectivity Technologies and Ecosystems Manager, Facebook
  • Durga Malladi, Durga Malladi, Senior Vice President, Engineering & General Manager, 4G/5G, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
