2019 TyE Carolinas’ High School Business Competition

TiE Carolinas is delighted to present our 2019 TyE Carolinas’ High School Business Competition. Our four teams worked hard over a period of 3 months to quickly incubate an idea, gain sponsor user validation, define a business plan, and culminate with a 15 minute pitch to a panel of judges. We are very excited to present what our teams have in store for us this year.

Time: 5:30PM - 8:30PM ET

Guest of Honor

Elaine F. Marshall

North Carolina Secretary of State

In 1996, Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall became the first woman ever elected to a statewide, executive branch office in North Carolina.

Secretary Marshall was a member of the NC State Senate before rising to statewide office. She holds a B.S. in Home Economics from the University of Maryland and a law degree from Campbell University. She has received Honorary Doctorate Degrees from Campbell University, Lees-McRae College, Meredith College and the Republic of Moldova Testemitanu State University of Medicine.

Her work experiences include teaching Home Economics in the public school and community college systems, co-ownership of a book and gift store, establishing an interior decorating business and the private practice of law.

Secretary Marshall has been very active in many civic groups in the areas of child welfare, women's issues, and agriculture and small town economic development.

Since becoming Secretary of State, she has received numerous state and national awards for leadership in technology, government innovation, and women's leadership. 

She is married to Jessie Thomas Bunn.

Judges

Todd Olson

Todd Olson is co-founder and CEO of Pendo, a product cloud that helps product teams deliver software customers love. A three-time entrepreneur, Olson teamed up with fellow product leaders and technologists from Red Hat, Cisco and Google to launch Pendo in October 2013. The company has since raised $106 million in venture capital, landed nearly 800 customers and now employs 300 people across offices in Raleigh, San Francisco, New York and Israel. It was named an Inc. Best Workplace and to the Forbes Cloud 100 and Next Billion-Dollar Startups lists for 2018.

Vandana Dake

As Principal of Alliance Architecture, Vandana Dake provides a broad range of experience in design and construction — both locally and internationally. Her technical expertise and strong design concepts inform her work, ranging from schematic design through construction administration. 

She has received numerous awards, including much recognition from Downtown Durham, Inc. for Best Projects in 2004 and 2005 and from the Raleigh Preservation Society for Best Projects in 2005.

Timothy Humphrey

Timothy Humphrey is currently Vice President, IBM Chief Data Office. He is also the Senior State Executive for IBM in North Carolina and Senior Location Executive for IBM in Research Triangle Park, NC, one of the company’s largest sites. Previously, Tim held various IBM executive roles spanning Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Data, Acquisitions, Supply Chain, and Sales Support. Tim has over 20 years of global experience in the computing industry with experience in technical support, hardware & software development, quality assurance, and battery technology. 

Tim engages in several non-profit fundraising activities, special events, and volunteer efforts. He serves as a board member for many local non-profit organizations. Tim is also a very active mentor to over 30 global professionals, students, and youth.

Tim graduated from North Carolina State University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and is a member of the North Carolina State University Electrical and Computer Engineering Hall of Fame.

Mark Phillips

Mark Phillips is the Managing Director at Jacobs Capital, a boutique investment banking firm based in Chapel Hill that focuses on M&A advisory and business valuations for closely held private businesses across virtually all industries.  Mr. Phillips joined Jacobs Capital in 2010, and currently leads the execution of M&A transactions and manages most daily operations for the firm.  Mr. Phillips received both his Bachelor’s and MBA degrees from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  While earning his MBA, he was a fellowship recipient, a Dean’s Scholar, and was awarded the Frank Hawkins Kenan Award, given to the top overall student in the class. Prior to business school, He spent seven years in a variety of roles with a subsidiary of Barclays in Charlotte, NC and Phoenix, AZ.  Mr. Phillips also serves as Board President for the Raleigh-Durham chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG), the nation’s largest middle-market M&A trade organization, and is a member of Greensboro’s Society of Financial Services Professionals.
