Theme: Pathways to Connectivity and Security for Industrial IoT

Industrial IoT has seen continuous adoption and scaling up. Industrial IoT brings the convergence of IT & OT (Operation Technology) with benefits of improved operational efficiency, productivity, asset utilization, reducing lifecycle costs & opening new business models/services.

Many different communication protocols (Modbus, Profinet, Profibus, etc) were designed to address specific industrial application cases by different companies or organizations. To enable connectivity to IT Systems, different connectivity protocols such as  OPC UA, HTTP (REST/ JSON), MQTT, AMQP, CoAP & DDS are used. Traditionally OT systems comprising PLC, SCADA , DCS, etc were designed to be isolated from Internet connectivity. In a Survey by IoT Nexus, covering hundreds of multi-national corporations, start-ups and SME’s It was found that 77% of respondents saw interoperability as the biggest challenge facing the internet of things.

The Value that can be derived from Industrial IoT makes it necessary, but Integrating the OT/ Industrial systems with IT - Cloud based technologies brings several serious challenges of Interoperability and Security. IoTForum is working on a Fresh Thinking Approach to address the IoT Security issues in Indian context.

Organization: Nexiot

We need to understand the different standards & methodologies to address these challenges. OPC Foundation has been working to abstract PLC specific protocols into standardized interface (OPC UA) . The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), which has a mission to accelerate secured industrial internet of things . ISA (International Society for Automation) has ISA-99 working group that has released the ISA/ IEC 62443 Industrial Cybersecurity Standard which is widely adopted

Nexiot is a IoT & Cybersecurity focused organization based in Bangalore. Nexiot collaborates with Industry leading organizations who provide OPC Servers, IIoT Gateways/ IIoT end nodes, Cybersecurity tools & Platforms.
