Staying Ahead of the Technology Curve

Bishnu Gogoi PhD

Founder and CEO, Versana Micro Inc.

President, Axtec Consulting Group

The growth of the global modern high tech economy is based on the continuous stream of innovation and invention based on new materials, processes, designs, devices, products, systems, techniques, practices and methods. Countries which have a history of innovation have significant advantages in the global marketplace by staying ahead of the technology curve and are able to develop their economies further leading to a higher standard of living. It is well understood that small companies with innovative ideas and approaches are the real engines of economic growth as well as job creation. While India is emerging as a major player in the global economy, with impressive growth over the last thirty years, it still has not yet realized its full potential in terms of its human capital with respect to innovation and entrepreneurship and becoming a leader in innovation commensurate with its size. There are emerging technology trends in IOT, AR/VR, AI/ML, Robotics, Automation and Edge Computing which provide tremendous opportunities for innovation to completely disrupt the status quo. This talk will focus on how to develop, encourage, foster and nurture an innovative mindset and culture in India with a systematic approach which will lead to an explosive growth in the economy while addressing some of the most pressing issues facing India and the world. The qualities and characteristics which lead to an innovative mindset will be introduced along with the kind of educational system that fosters enquiry and problem solving. Once an innovative culture has been established in the society from a young age, techniques, methods and processes to identify and solidify innovative ideas with potential for practical and commercial realization will be introduced. These include approaches on how to define and capture the specific aspects of the innovative ideas, how to protect them from an Intellectual Property perspective and ultimately how to convert the protected innovation to reality for societal and commercial benefits for the innovator and the economy. Strategies for protection of innovation for Intellectual Property Rights will be discussed along with a general discussion of patents, trade secrets and knowhow. Those who lead by innovation are in the driver’s seat by being ahead of the technology curve and preventing others by putting barriers to entry by judicious use of Intellectual Property strategies and regulations. The approaches of reducing the protected innovation to reality through start-ups and small companies so that they can stay ahead of the technology curve will also be discussed. The talk will provide real world examples of how innovation can provide significant competitive advantages in the marketplace while benefiting the innovators, the economy and society.
