‘Economic Development or Growth: What’s more relevant for Job creation?

Mahesh Vyas is Managing Director and CEO of Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt Ltd.

Mahesh is the chief architect of CMIE’s databases. These include CMIE’s proprietary databases – Prowess, CapEx and the Consumer Pyramids Household Survey database. Prowess is India’s largest database on the performance of Indian companies, CapEx is India’s largest database on the implementation of investment projects to create new capacities in India and, Consumer Pyramids Household Survey is India’s largest panel household survey.

Mahesh writes regularly on the Indian economy for CMIE’s Economic Outlook and other services. He also writes a weekly column “On the Job” for Business Standard. His writings focus on labour markets, enterprises and investments. These are systematically empirical based on the vast CMIE databases.

Mahesh serves as an independent director on Geojit Financial Services Ltd. Earlier he was an independent director on Centurion Bank and on Quantum Asset Management Company Ltd. He was a member of the High Level Committee to Examine Auditor-Company Relationship set up by the Department of Company Affairs in 2002; a member of the Advisory Panel on Transparency Standards and of the Technical Sub-group on Data Dissemination Standards set up by Reserve Bank of India in 2007; a member of Working Group for Development of Methodology for Compilation of Index of Industrial Production in 2012, and a member of Expert Group to Review the Methodology for Measurement of Poverty in 2014.

Raj Nair, Chairman- Avalon Consulting ( Management Consultant)

Raj Nair is a strategy consultant, entrepreneur, and investor. He is the Chairman of Avalon Consulting (strategy, analytics & business transformation), Germinait Solutions (AI based technology start-up for Customer Care, Reputation Management, etc.) and AGR Knowledge Services (global B2B MR & business services). He is the immediate past President of the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (formerly called, Indian Merchants Chamber) and former member of the Board of TiE, Mumbai. His previous roles include Merchant Banking (Grindlays Bank) and in Consumer Durables marketing. He graduated in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and in business management from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Distinguished Service Award by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

He is a mentor for many tech and design start-ups.

He had correctly called out the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-09 in 2007. He publishes an annual paper around New Year about what to expect in the course of the year on socio-political front and their impact on global economics. This year’s annual note was titled, ‘The Tipping Point’ in anticipation of huge changes in 2020. He is a speaker at several Indian and global events.
