EV Charging: Accelerating EV Adoption

Objective: This panel discussion brings together practitioners and thought leaders working on innovative technologies and novel solutions to promote the adoption of EVs and their encompassing energy infrastructure.

Bringing together practitioners and thought leaders to discuss smarter, more efficient and affordable charging infrastructure to accelerate EV adoption.

Context: The transition to electric mobility is a promising global strategy for decarbonizing the transport sector. The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) over the last few years is great, however, increased demand for power to charge these EVs is straining the energy grid. With the market share for longer-range EVs continuing to grow, so does the demand for innovative charging and charge-management solutions.

Charging infrastructure needs to take into consideration different types of EVs, their location and scope of application. A contextual approach is required to meet local needs for optimal integration with the electricity supply and transportation networks. Accordingly, smarter grid management including novel approaches to energy storage are necessary.

Lithium-ion batteries are by far the most popular energy storage option today and control more than 90% of the global grid battery storage market. However, given the global scarcity of lithium-ion raw materials, vulnerabilities of foreign supply chains, and the cost of care, reliance on lithium-ion amounts to increased risks for decarbonization. Finding alternatives to lithium-ion and diversifying the energy storage mix is therefore critical to sustain climate action.

Amongst the potential innovations in energy storage, zinc-based batteries are well-positioned to establish itself as a viable alternative that offers safer, cheaper, and longer-lasting technology.
