TiE Institute Presents

Pitfalls and Promises of Prototyping

February 27, 2020

With all the emphasis these days on design thinking and design practices (yes they are different) prototyping is an essential part of the process. But what are some of the pitfalls and promises of prototyping?

A promising idea pushed all the way to a final solution without prototyping has a high risk of failure if even a few of the assumptions are wrong. The ability to develop prototypes at various levels of fidelity allows one to explore a variety of approaches and ideas. By starting with low fidelity, inexpensive prototypes in the early stages provides room and capability to explore different ideas and throw away unpromising ones without major financial damage. Prototyping helps you to have a bias to action, giving your customers and reviewers something to react to so you can validate your ideas early and frequently. In all that, prototyping without a purpose can be destructive. Most importantly prototyping done well and early can change a process of rushing to failure, into a process of learning through evolution.

In this session of TIE Institute we will cover some of the core principles underlying prototyping, and the span of prototyping with a focus on early stage. Our guest speaker is Joanne Gardner, Director of the Prototyping Lab at Bayview yards. Joanne will speak on the continuum of prototyping and emerging practices, tools and methods of early stage prototyping. We will explore some real world examples of prototyping.
